American Idol Vet Justin Guarini Say's He Often Skips Meals So His Children Have Enough To Eat

Justin Guarini became famous as runner-up on American Idol Season 1 and ended up losing to Kelly Clarkson made the following statements recently to his blog.

“I have spent days skipping meals in order to make sure I have enough,” he admits. “To make sure my children, and my wife have enough.”

The day after posting those comments to his blog Justin Guarini made a statement proclaiming he is far from poverty which many are taking as figurative and not literal. Guarini’s publicist Jeff Ballard confirms that the post on the website is authentic, but the singer is not doing any interviews to discuss the matter further.

He contrasts his current financial state with a time at the height of his fame “when I couldn’t walk the street w/o being stopped a hundred times for a photo or a press of flesh.”

Guarini goes into grim detail about his current station in life, more than a decade after he shot to fame alongside Season 1 winner Kelly Clarkson.

“I drive a family oriented import, that is over mileage. My clothes are a mixture of gift-suite holdovers, things I bought when I had money but no style, and H&M,” he writes.

He also writes, eloquently at times, about trying to keep a smile on his face as he and his family — wife Reina and their children — struggle tremendously.

“I’m unafraid to say that I am terrified. I am struggling to make each day meet the next without breaking down and curling up. Sometimes I envy people who sit at a desk all day (at least you know where your next meal is coming from). I’ll smile, and laugh, and joke, and entertain…because sometimes it’s the only way to keep the ghosts of regret and loss at bay. I am unafraid to be afraid, and in that fear I gather strength.”

And Guarini is well aware that spilling his guts in this fashion might seem a bit unusual in the glitz and glam world of Hollywood.

“It feels like madness to admit any of this,” he says, “but I’d rather be outright crazy and free, than seemingly sane and a prisoner of convention.”

The good news in all this is that Guarini has a new job: he’s set to hit Broadway next month with stars Orlando Bloom and Condola Rashad in Romeo and Juliet.
